Clusters of lily-like flowers on tall, stiff stems emerge from parallel stacks of strappy emerald green leaves. In a range of intense red-orange, tangerine, peach with lemon yellow centers and sometimes even butter yellow, these bright, long-lasting blooms are the perfect antidote to gray winter days. This native of southern Africa is perfectly content to be a houseplant and will slowly grow into an impressive specimen, elegant even when not in bloom. Similar to the more renowned holiday Amaryllis (Hippeastrum spp.), it requires a month of cool temperatures in autumn, followed by a six-to-eight week rest period with very little water in order to start blooming.
