Ruffled, pink-edged pointy leaves spread outward like a starfish with a wavy central pattern of cream and olive, stained all over with a rose-pink blush. Differing from all other bromeliads, it is indeed a star bound to earth as it can only grow terrestrially (or in a pot) rather than perched on an aerial substrate. Spreads by producing pups (offshoots) near the base of the plant. Happiest with warmth, humidity, adequate fertilization and in a pot that is wider than it is deep. May produce small white flowers from near its center cup, the origin of the botanical name Cryptanthus which means “hidden flower.”
