With tops decorated by translucent leaf windows for water-preserving photosynthesis, the pairs of bulbous leaves are separated by a slight fissure and nestle into the substrate with no stalk or stem. Native to the stony ridges, gravely flats, and hills of sand of the Orange River valley between Namibia and South Africa, they’ve evolved a capacity to store water and live for months without rain. Dormant in summer, becoming active in fall with a return to watering; spiky bright yellow and white flowers will emerge directly from the fissure.
