Slow-growing but long-lived, this crazily attractive plant is not actually a palm but a succulent shrub native to southern Madagascar. Spear-like, dark green leaves top a thorny, rounded stump that eventually becomes a tall, spiny and spindly grey trunk with an amusing topknot.
